What to Ask a Potential Wedding Planner
Planning a wedding can be extremely rewarding—especially when you consider the amazing feeling when everything finally comes together on the big day. But it can also be a time-consuming, stressful, and difficult process.
For those who don’t have the time to commit to wedding planning or want to ensure that their money and effort are well invested, hiring a wedding planner is a lifesaver. But before you hire a wedding planner to help out with your upcoming nuptials, there are a few important things you’ll need to know.
Here are some of the most important questions to ask someone you’re considering as your wedding planner.
1. Will you be available on the date of our wedding?
This is the absolute most important question to ask. If your wedding planner won’t be available on the day of the wedding to ensure everything comes together smoothly, you may need to go with another planner or consider choosing a different date.
2. How much do you charge for a wedding?
Some wedding planners charge a flat fee for a wedding, while others charge a percentage of the total costs. Avoid surprises at the end of the process by finding out what type of financial agreement you’re getting yourself into from the very beginning.
3. Can you provide me with a detailed list of what your fee includes?
Some wedding planners may take care of every aspect of the design, planning, and management of each wedding. Others may specialize in a particular part of the planning process. Find out how much your wedding planner will be taking care of—and what you may be responsible for on your own.
4. Do you have any references or testimonials?
Any good wedding planner should easily be able to provide you with references or testimonials from couples they’d worked with in the past.
5. What is your cancellation or refund policy?
Though every couple deserves a completely stress-free, perfect wedding, you should always prepare yourself in case something comes up. What if you get suddenly sick or injured before your wedding date? What if you have to change the date for another reason? Ask your wedding planner what the protocol would be should you have to change your plans.
6. How many weddings have you planned?
Knowing how long your wedding planner has been in business or how experienced they are can really help you gain confidence in their work.
7. Are you familiar with the location/venue we have in mind?
If your wedding planner specializes in metropolitan ceremonies but you’re interested in beach locations, it may not be the best fit. But if your wedding planner has lived in your desired area for years, they probably have a good idea of what’s possible.
8. Tell me about your favorite/most memorable/most challenging wedding.
Pay attention when your potential wedding planner is describing a wedding after this question. Find out what it was that they loved about their favorite wedding or how they handled a sticky situation with a challenging wedding. This can give you an idea of what to expect with your wedding.
9. Do you work alone or with a team?
Your wedding planner may work with a designated team or they may outsource other aspects to outside companies/individuals. You may like the simplicity of having all the resources you need in one company—or you may want to choose your own vendors. Be sure to communicate this to your wedding planner.
10. What will the communication/planning process look like?
How many meetings are included with the price? How many phone calls? Emails? Find out exactly how the communication will work to ensure a stress-free and simplified process.
